Three years ago a small group of local residents were intrigued by the thought of entering St Thomas into the Royal Horticultural Society South West in Bloom Pennant Awards. Could St Thomas really be thought of as an Urban Village?
Apparently it could as the South West in Bloom is not just about gardening and flowers, but about the local community, the environment, heritage and sustainability. In the first year of entering, St Thomas was awarded a Silver Gilt, this success was repeated in 2015 and Bloom’In St Thomas was born; our aim is to Go for Gold! We have a dedicated group of local volunteers who all live in St Thomas, and who work hard to promote the area. Bloom In’ St Thomas aim to involve local people, community organisations and local businesses working together to make lasting improvements to our area. Our entry is assessed on community participation, environmental responsibility and horticultural achievement, and we provide the judges with a portfolio to support our entry. There is always loads to do, so if you’d like to be involved please get in touch.
St Thomas (St Thomas the Apostle’s) is located on the western side of the river Exe, connected to Exeter by Exe Bridge. It has a number of pubs, cafes, places of worship, a large shopping precinct and a number of small independent businesses. It is a vibrant community and the area is notable for its parks and green spaces. St Thomas is easily accessible by car and public transport with its own railway station and has plenty of parking.
